He had been on his wanderings for two years now, and his health had improved hardly at all: doubtless the shortcomings of medicine in the 1880s were in part responsible, but where the greater part of the blame for his lack of progress really lay is made apparent by a letter of mid-July from Sils-Maria to his mother. She has been perplexed and worried by his continual sickness and, it would seem, reproaching him for not taking better care of himself. He tries to reassure her, but his protestations, if read in the knowledge of how sick he actually was, are the reverse of reassuring:
